Timber hardwood decking choices and maintenance made simple
We only use high-quality, durable hardwoods that are well suited to Adelaide’s changeable climate. We ensure your timber deck will look fabulous for many, many years with minimal upkeep.
Here are the two main decking timbers we recommend:
Kapur, a light reddish-brown hardwood that’s known for its strength and stability. Kapur resists warping and holds its finish well, making it an excellent low-maintenance option for undercover decks as well as those exposed to full weather.
Merbau, a dense, rich brown, hardwood that is renowned for its distinctive appearance and exceptional durability. It’s a long-lasting choice that works beautifully in high-use areas and adds natural warmth and character to your outdoor space.
Easy maintenance, long-lasting results
Both types of timber decking will need occasional oiling to maintain their rich colour and protect their surface from the elements.
Kapur will need to be oiled approximately every 5 years if undercover or every 2 years if exposed and Merbau every 3 years if undercover or every year if exposed to the elements.
The oiling process is simple. We recommend washing the deck with DeckWash before applying a quality decking oil with a lambswool applicator. It’s a quick and simple job that keeps your deck looking beautiful and adds protection from the weather. We will provide you with our easy step-by step guide on how to care for your deck to keep it looking just as fabulous as the day it was built for many years to come.
Looking for a Maintenance Free Decking Option?
Composite decking, is a synthetic product made from recycled plastic and wood chips or polyurethane resin (depending on your chosen brand) that replicates timber. Composite decking can be a more costly option but is 100 percent maintenance free and offers many colour choices and a slightly more modern look than traditional timber. Most composite decking brands come with a 25 year guarantee against weathering, staining or fading.

How we bring your decking vision to life, from initial idea to completion
We make it easy to transform your outdoor living area into a beautiful, functional space with the addition of a gorgeous hardwood timber or composite deck. With over 35 years’ experience in building and garden design we offer honest, expert advice and unique designs tailored to suit your lifestyle and budget. From your first chat with Richard to the final oiling and handover, our process is smooth, straightforward, and stress-free.
Step 1
Free measure, quote & design consultation
Richard will visit your home to measure the space, discuss your vision, and assess key site conditions, such as landscape conditions, and any local council requirements that may apply.
You’ll receive a free, no-obligation quote with honest, competitive pricing for the deck structure, with any optional extras such as stairs, ramps, seating, balustrades, or privacy screens itemised. You will also receive our Terms & Conditions, Acceptance of Quotation form, our Decking Information guide and other relevant brochures.
We’ll also thoroughly discuss your timber options and the relevant maintenance requirements so you can make confident and informed choice about the product that would best suit your needs.
Step 2
Council application management
If you’d like to proceed, simply return your signed Acceptance of Quotation form along with a small deposit (just 10% capped at $1000) to get the ball rolling.
If your deck requires council approval, we will handle the entire process on your behalf. From preparing drawings and submitting documents and fees to liaising with council or certifiers as required.
NOTE: Not all decks require Council Approval – This will depend on your area and zone, the type of deck you wish to build and the exact location on your property. Richard is very familiar with council requirements so will be able to advise you when he visits you on site.
Step 3
Building & oiling
Once any relevant approvals are in place, we will contact you to confirm your material choices and schedule delivery and installation dates with you.
A Progress Payment will be due on delivery of your materials.
Soon after delivery of materials, our experienced team will then construct your deck with precision and care.
When the build is complete, if included in your package, our professional painter will come in to clean and oil your deck. Alternatively, you may choose to ‘do it yourself’ following our easy decking care guide.
Final payment is due on completion.

Steps or Ramps
Improve access to your deck, especially around pools or elevated decks.

Soild or slatted timber screening adds privacy, weather protection and safety for raised decks or boundary edges.
Pergolas or Verandahs
Extend your outdoor living space with seamless connections between covered and open areas with a beautiful pergola or verandah.
Richard’s tips for planning the perfect deck
With over 35 years of experience in the building and garden design and trade, Richard knows his stuff. Here are a few of his top tips for getting your decking project right from the start:
Consider how you want to utilise your space. Barbeque, outdoor kitchen and dining, a play space for the kids, entertaining, pool or spa surround – the options are endless.
Consider your location and possible weather exposure; Will your deck be undercover or exposed?
Think about accessibility to your home, garage, pool or spa area and consider the use of stairs, ramps and balustrades for added convenience and safety.
Don’t be put off by your sloping or split-level block, decking eliminates the need for expensive earthworks or retaining walls, while enhancing the look and functionality of multi-levelled blocks and maximising views.
Consider the maintenance requirements upfront. All hardwood decks need a little love and care from time to time. Choosing a quality hardwood, such as Merbau or Kapur will reduce the frequency of oiling required but if 100% maintenance free is more your style, then composite decking is the choice for you.
Consider your privacy. Slatted timber screening, café blinds, or a raised garden bed along the edge might be all you need to add privacy and turn a basic deck into a relaxing, private space perfect for morning coffee or entertaining.
Frequently asked questions about timber decking
What type of timber do you use for decking?
We use and recommend only premium grade Kapur and Merbau Hardwoods or composite decking materials for a maintenance free option.
How often does a hardwood deck need maintenance?
Depending on your choice of hardwood and whether your decking is completely undercover or partially or fully exposed to the elements, cleaning and oiling requirements will vary between every 1 – 5 years. Richard can clarify the maintenance requirements applicable to your particular situation.
Is decking a good choice for sloped or uneven land?
Yes. One of the most significant benefits of timber decking is that it suits all types of blocks and is particularly suited to sloped or uneven blocks as it alleviates the need for levelling and expensive earthworks or retaining walls. Decking is a smart, cost-effective option for multi-level and sloping properties.
Do I need council approval for a deck?
In many cases, the answer is “no”, but don’t worry, if you do need council approval, we will handle the entire process for you. From drafting, engineering and submission of all relevant documentation and fees to liaising with council officials – we do it all for you.
Can I add custom features such as stairs, ramps or screening?
Absolutely. We can design multi-level decks with integrated stairs, ramps, screening, balustrades, gates, and more. We’ll help you choose the features to maximise functionality and enhance the look of your space.
How long does it take to build a deck?
Most decks are built in just a few days, depending on size and complexity. We’ll discuss the delivery and installation process and anticipated timeline during your design and quote consultation.
What areas do you service?
We build decking across Adelaide, focussing on north-eastern suburbs, including Oakden, Klemzig, Golden Grove, Fairview Park, Greenwith, Wynn Vale, Blakeview, Para Hills, Salisbury and surrounding areas. Is there a warranty?
